Remember when we hit the year 2000 and all the tech people were bracing Y2K, which was supposed to be this total computer melt down? We'll here we are again seven years later and the techies are bracing for mini-Y2K because of the early start to daylight savings time.
If you know nothing about the reason behind this change, man you don't watch the news much, but here's my briefing - Congresses passed a broad energy savings bill in 2005. With one of the biggest supporting reasons being that it's would help "saves energy."
However, as I've argued many times before to friends who just don't give a shit, this energy savings idea is based on a report done by U.S. Department of Transportation in the 1970s. And in my opinion using that report as your basis is flawed. Guess why? In the 1970's we didn't have computers, cable TV, VCRs, video game systems, I-Pods, etc, etc. Our energy consumption has increases ex·po·nen·tial·ly since then.
Just listen to NPR sometime. On it people are arguing that the recreation industry has pushed for this change because more light in the evenings means more people stay out and spend money instead of going straight home after work. If this is the case then it only proves that money does buy everything – even an extra hour of daylight, which I didn't think could be bought.
Either way I'm annoyed because I've had to update all my computers…
