Life is a Cabaret ol’ chum …

Last night I saw Cabaret at the 5th. I loved it. I’ve seen it about four times now, one being a Green River Community College production, which wasn’t good so it shouldn’t really count.

Having seen the show so many times I have now started this terrible habit of comparing the actors to pervious actors I’ve seen in the role. Consistently comparing them to someone I found to be better suited for the role instead of judging the production in its whole. Needless to say I found the Emcee to be sort of grating in this production; at times I had no idea what the heck he was saying. I’d still recommend people to see the show, however.

Sort of like reading Brave New World once a year and finding new “enlightenment” from it I’m starting to get that out of Cabaret. Like last night it struck me that Sally Bowles personifies that person (all of us know this person) who never wants to leave the party – even when the party is clearly over.

Every circus needs its clown, every court its jester. It’s just sad that some people are so content to fill that role.
