I know that today was the 10th but it really felt like a Friday the 13th. It was like the air vibrated and all the oddball felt it, embraced it and let the world know that they two are here.
I must first start this all with the fact that when heading to work I had only had maybe four hours of sleep. Sadly operating on little sleep isn't as easy as it used to be. I digress. So I'm heading to my car in a very slow manner and as I walk out of my apartment building I practically trip over a group of homeless folks who have decided to have their morning cocktail directly in the middle of my path. I don't mean a group of two or three either. I mean a GROUP of at least 15, all of them sitting Indian style clutching their "brown-bagged" breakfast. Seeing homeless people in my neighborhood is nothing new. I've been know to come across one or two on early morning walks in Wright Park or sleeping under the tree across from my building, but never have I seen so many just parked in the middle of the sidewalk. Needless to say this sight did not deter me from my mission and so I continued on.
Then as I'm getting my morning jolt from the locally-owned, locally-operated - BUY LOCAL- drive-thru coffee stand I notice a very pregnant woman standing on the corner, dressed it what appears to ONLY be a hospital gown. She's taking drags from a cigarette as if it's her last moments on earth while her companion is holding a puppy on a leash. Did I mention she wasn't wearing shoes? The best I can guess is that she was on a walk trying to induce labor (the hospital was across the street) and decided that smoking on the corner of Division and 4th was a great way to spent sometime.
