What is it about independent films that make you think that you’re watching a family from circa 1982? What is with the clothes or the cars? This weekend was my only free time in-between classes so like any overachiever I stuffed as much into it as I possibly could. Including movies, movies, movies… I watched three independent films that I had been eyeing, but lacked time between school work and my real life.
First up … Juno … Dialogue reminiscent of Dawson’s Creek with an early 80’s feel. I liked the fact that she had a hamburger phone. Why? Because it showed that she was still very much a child, it made you understand that she really didn’t have the capacity to raise a child. Plus, if she was actually as smart as the dialogue would suggest then she would have know that in order to prevent a baby, a condom is a really smart weapon of choice.
Wristcutters: A Love Story … yeah it was crap... When a movie is called Wristcutters and is followed by A Love Story you really should know you’re in for an hour and 45 minutes of crap. This was time I should have spent making the world a better place – or at least making my apartment a bit cleaner. But I can’t be brilliant all the time.
Lars and the Real Girl … Did anyone else want to scrub down the entire cast with a bar of soap and some elbow grease. Have you ever heard the saying “You have so much dirt behind your ears you could grow potatoes?” Well if that was true than the whole cast could have produced truck fulls of potatoes. When they were washing the sex doll all I could think was “You’re dirty too – get in, get in!” Once I got past the dirt, I thought it was a touching film about loneliness.
